This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
