The Video Platform Grants Users Power to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to cut down on the amount of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This move comes as the platform announced that it now features more than 1 billion content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a widespread release. This development comes amid a rise in AI content, driven by recent AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is deemed mass-produced AI material, a label for substandard, mass-produced content that is typically nonsensical or surreal.

“We know from our community that many people like content created using AI tools, including AI artwork to science explainers, and we want to provide users the option to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own choices,” said a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as made with AI. Overall, over 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the platform every day, making AI-generated material a limited part of its total content library.

User Control Features

Members will be able to reduce or increase the level of artificial media they watch by opening the topic control setting in the app and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that are already be controlled under the setting include politics, fashion, aesthetics, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its guidelines require users to label convincing artificially created content, and it prohibits dangerous deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is unmarked can be taken down under its community policies.

In addition, the platform will henceforth apply an AI-generated label to content produced via its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This action is intended to stop users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also introducing a two million dollar awareness program for professionals and organizations to produce informative material about ethical AI use. This program will benefit educational bodies specializing in training programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

TikTok has justified its safety measures, following controversy over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is planning to cut a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in its British office, with labor groups and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but AI can safeguard staff by removing the most graphic content ahead of it has to be seen by humans. TikTok stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.

It is vital to combine staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us process content quickly.”
