A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
